Pet Turf Installation That Solves the Smell Instead of Masking It

A yard your dog can use every day of the year, with no mud, no bare patches and nothing toxic in the grass. We build pet turf around drainage first, because odor is a drainage problem long before it is a turf problem. Rinse it with a hose and it comes clean.

What is Pet Friendly Turf, and How Is It Different From an Ordinary Lawn?

Pet friendly turf is a purpose-built system rather than landscape turf laid in a dog yard. Four things are different, and they only work as a set. The turf itself uses a shorter, tougher blade that will not mat into a dirt path where a dog runs the same route every day. The backing is fully permeable across the whole sheet rather than hole-punched, which lets liquid pass straight through instead of pooling and looking for the nearest gap. The fibers or backing carry an antimicrobial treatment that slows the bacterial growth turning urine into ammonia, which is the compound actually responsible for that sharp dog-run smell.

Turf Restoration and Design installs pet systems with our own crew, and we specify every layer rather than ordering a single product and hoping it holds up. We size the drainage to the number and size of the dogs using the space, lock down every edge and seam so a determined digger cannot get a grip on it, and set the infill rate for odor control rather than for looks. Because we do not subcontract, the person who assessed your drainage is the person who builds it.

Our Services

Pet turf is one of five residential systems we build. Each one is specified separately, because a surface built for a dog and a surface built for a putter have almost nothing in common.

Artificial Turf for Dogs in Residential Backyards

Dogs run the same paths, dig in the same corners, and use the same spots again and again. In residential backyards, this quickly turns natural grass into worn trails and bare dirt. Artificial turf for dogs holds up to running, rolling, and playing without tearing or turning muddy after rain. It also removes the need for fertilizers and pesticides, which keeps the yard more comfortable for curious noses.

Turf Restoration and Design selects turf with the right density and blade strength for your dog's size and energy level. If you want the rest of your property to match, our residential turf installation service can cover front yards and side areas too.

Benefits of Our Service

The Odor Problem Gets Solved Underneath

Ammonia is what you smell, so we deal with it at the drainage and infill layer rather than covering it with a scented product that wears off.

Nothing Toxic Goes Down on It

No herbicide, no fertilizer and no pesticide, which removes the exposure that veterinary research has linked to higher cancer risk in dogs.

The Path Along the Fence Stays Green

A dog patrolling the same line every day will kill natural grass within a season, and turf holds that route without thinning or wearing through.

The Mud Stops Before It Reaches the Door

LoreThere is no bare soil left for paws to churn up, so wet weather stops meaning towels by the back door and paw prints down the hallway.

Artificial Grass Drainage for Dogs & Odor Control

Good drainage is the most important part of any pet turf project. Without it, urine can collect under the surface and cause lingering smells. Proper artificial grass drainage for dogs uses a permeable backing and a well-compacted stone base that lets liquid pass through quickly. Infill options designed for pet areas can also help reduce odor between cleanings.

A simple rinse with a hose keeps most yards fresh with little effort. Our owner spent more than twenty years working with turf before starting Turf Restoration and Design, and much of that experience centers on the base and drainage work that most people never see.

Dog Run Turf Installation for Side Yards & Kennels

Dog runs give pets a safe, dedicated space to exercise and go to the bathroom. These narrow areas see heavy, focused use, so natural grass rarely survives there for long. Artificial pet turf installation turns side yards, fenced runs, and kennel areas into clean surfaces that are easy to rinse and maintain. Secure edges along fences and borders help discourage digging and keep the turf in place.

Turf Restoration and Design measures each run carefully, and our own team installs it with our own equipment and never a subcontractor. Boarding facilities and apartment dog parks can also use our commercial turf installation service for larger pet areas.

Our Work Process

01

We Zone the Yard Around Your Dog

We watch where your dog actually goes, where they run and where they sit. That determines which areas need the pet build and which do not, and it usually saves money by not treating the whole yard as a dog yard.

02

We Build a Base That Moves Liquid

The pet base is built to drain faster than a standard lawn base, and where the ground will not take the volume we run a drain line to an outlet. This is the layer that decides whether the yard smells in year two.

03

We Lay the Turf and Lock Every Edge

The turf is anchored on a tighter pattern than a normal lawn so a digging dog cannot lift a corner, then the antimicrobial infill is broomed in at the rate the space needs. We rinse it down with you and show you the routine.

What People Are Saying About Us

Testimonials

    Karen M.

    Milton, GA

We had a strip of yard that never grew anything but weeds and mud. They regraded the whole thing before they laid anything down, which nobody else who quoted us even brought up. Two summers in and it still looks like the day they finished.

      Derrick H.

      Johns Creek, GA

Two labs and a yard that turned into a swamp every time it rained. They walked us through the drainage and the pet infill instead of just handing over a number, and there is no smell at all. The dogs took about ten seconds to decide they approved.

        Tom B.

        Roswell, GA

I asked for a putting green and they came back with a layout that used a slope I thought was a problem. Three real breaks on it now and it rolls true. They were on site every day and cleaned up behind themselves every evening.

          Angela R.

          Peachtree Corners, GA

Our courtyard was costing us a fortune in irrigation and yearly sod repair. They phased the work so tenants were never fully blocked off, and they hit the dates they gave us. That maintenance line has basically disappeared from the budget.

Pet-Friendly Turf Installers Focused on Comfort & Safety

Every pet is different, from energetic puppies to senior dogs with sensitive joints. Soft blades and a padded feel help make the surface comfortable for lying down and playing. Turf can get warm in direct summer sun, so shade, water bowls, and a quick rinse help keep paws comfortable on hot days. Tight seams and secure edges also prevent paws and claws from catching on loose turf.

As pet-friendly turf installers, Turf Restoration and Design is licensed, insured, and a member of the National Synthetic Turf Council. Every artificial grass installation we complete includes a 15 year material warranty and a 5 year labor warranty.

          Frequently Asked Questions

Not if the system is built right and rinsed occasionally. Odor comes from ammonia, and a proper build stops it three ways: liquid drains straight through instead of sitting, an antimicrobial treatment slows the bacteria that produce ammonia, and the infill captures what does form. The honest part is that odor-neutralizing infill works by holding ammonia until water flushes it through, so it needs rinsing to keep working, especially in a multi-dog yard. We set that routine up with you at handover, and it takes a few minutes.
A dog cannot dig through the middle of a stretched, anchored sheet, because there is nothing to grip and a compacted base underneath. Edges are the real risk, which is why we anchor the perimeter far more tightly than a standard lawn and bury or lock every edge against a hard border. Chewing is uncommon once the turf is down and settled, and a determined puppy is usually a supervision problem rather than a turf problem. Damage caused by a dog is repairable without replacing the whole area.
The infill we use in pet areas is a natural mineral, and zeolite in particular is sold as an animal feed additive, so a small amount picked up on a tongue is not a concern. We do not use crumb rubber in residential pet areas. If you have specific worries about materials, ask us for the product data sheet before you commit, and check whether the fibers and backing are PFAS-free, which is a fair question to put to any installer.
Yes, but the build has to be specified for it rather than scaled up afterwards. More dogs and bigger dogs mean more liquid volume in the same footprint, so we increase the drainage capacity of the base, raise the infill rate and sometimes add a drain line rather than relying on the ground to take it. Heavier dogs also put more force on seams and edges, so anchoring gets tighter. Tell us the number, the breeds and the rough weights during the site visit and we will build to it.
Almost always, and usually faster than owners expect. Dogs choose a bathroom spot by scent and texture, and pet turf reads as grass underfoot, so most take to it within a day or two. If yours is hesitant, moving a little of the old scent to the new area and walking them there on the usual schedule sorts it out quickly. Puppies and dogs raised on turf tend not to notice the difference at all.

            Area We Serve

Pet installs are the ones people call us back about most, usually with a question about the cleaning routine or a request to extend the area. Keeping our service radius small is what makes that possible, because we are close enough to come out rather than talk you through it on the phone. All of our work is done by our own crews inside this area.
