Artificial Putting Green for Backyard, and Why Build One at Home?

A backyard putting green lets you practice your short game any time without driving to the course or waiting for an open practice area. It also gives family and friends a fun way to spend time outside together. Natural grass greens need daily mowing, rolling, and watering, which makes them unrealistic for most homes. Artificial turf for a backyard putting green gives you a smooth, consistent surface with very little upkeep. A good green depends on careful base work, because even small dips can throw off your putts. We offers backyard putting green installation services shaped by our owner's more than twenty years of turf experience.

Turf Restoration and Design builds these greens with our own crew and our own equipment, and we do not subcontract any part of the work. We shape the contours into the base by hand rather than laying flat turf and calling a slight fall a break, we use a nylon putting surface rather than the polyethylene landscape turf some installers substitute, and we set the infill rate to the speed you actually want to practice at.

Our Services

A putting green is one of five residential systems we build. Each one is engineered for a different job, and the turf, infill and base are different in every case.

Custom Artificial Putting Green Design with Contours & Breaks

A flat green gets boring fast, while a well-designed one challenges you like a real course. A custom artificial putting green can include gentle slopes, breaks, multiple cups, and a fringe collar around the edges. Some homeowners also add a chipping area or sand bunker to practice approach shots. The design should fit the shape of your yard and look natural next to patios, gardens, and walkways.

Turf Restoration and Design shapes every contour by hand in the base before any turf goes down, and our own team does the work from start to finish. We can also blend the green into surrounding turf through our residential turf installation service.

Benefits of Our Service

You Practice Where Your Strokes Actually Go

Close to 60 percent of a round is played from inside 100 yards, and that is the part of the game almost nobody practices between rounds.

The Same Roll Every Single Day

There is no morning dew, no afternoon dryness and no seasonal change in speed, so what you learn on Tuesday still applies on Saturday.

Speed Set to Match Your Home Course

We calibrate the infill and surface during installation, so your green plays at the pace you actually compete on rather than an arbitrary factory setting.

It Uses the Part of the Yard You Never Use

LoreMost greens we build go into a side yard, a slope or a shaded corner that was doing nothing, which means you gain a feature without losing usable space.

Backyard Putting Green Cost & What Affects Your Price

Backyard putting green cost depends on several factors, so there is no single price for every project. Size is the biggest one, followed by the number of contours, cups, and extra features like fringe or chipping areas. Site conditions matter too, since slopes, poor drainage, or tree roots can add base preparation work. The turf type you choose also affects the final price.

As experienced backyard putting green installers, Turf Restoration and Design measures your space and explains each cost factor before any work begins. Every green includes a 15 year material warranty and a 5 year labor warranty, and you can pair it with our lawn turf installation for a complete yard.

Backyard Tee Line and Hitting Bay Installation

If there is enough room, a hitting station turns a practice green into a complete home range. We install a durable tee line turf that takes repeated strikes without matting, set at a level, stable grade so your footing is the same every swing, and sized to whether you are hitting into netting, a screen or open space. Homeowners running a launch monitor or a simulator setup usually want a specific surface height and firmness, and we build to that spec rather than to a standard.

Where the hitting bay feeds into a net or a garage, we handle the transition so the whole area works as one space. It is also the piece that makes the setup usable in bad weather, since a covered bay keeps the practice going when the green is soaked.

Our Work Process

01

We Design the Green Around Your Game

We walk the space, find where a green fits best, and ask what you want to practice. Whether you need lag putts, short breaking putts or a chipping approach changes the size, the shape and the number of cups.

02

We Shape and Level the Base

The breaks and tiers are built into the compacted base by hand, then the surface is leveled and rolled until it is true. This is the step that decides whether the ball holds its line, and it cannot be corrected later.

03

We Fit the Surface and Set the Speed

The nylon turf is cut, seamed and anchored, cups are set to regulation depth, then infill is broomed in at the rate that produces the speed you asked for. We roll putts across it with you before we load the truck.

What People Are Saying About Us

Testimonials

    Karen M.

    Milton, GA

We had a strip of yard that never grew anything but weeds and mud. They regraded the whole thing before they laid anything down, which nobody else who quoted us even brought up. Two summers in and it still looks like the day they finished.

      Derrick H.

      Johns Creek, GA

Two labs and a yard that turned into a swamp every time it rained. They walked us through the drainage and the pet infill instead of just handing over a number, and there is no smell at all. The dogs took about ten seconds to decide they approved.

        Tom B.

        Roswell, GA

I asked for a putting green and they came back with a layout that used a slope I thought was a problem. Three real breaks on it now and it rolls true. They were on site every day and cleaned up behind themselves every evening.

          Angela R.

          Peachtree Corners, GA

Our courtyard was costing us a fortune in irrigation and yearly sod repair. They phased the work so tenants were never fully blocked off, and they hit the dates they gave us. That maintenance line has basically disappeared from the budget.

Indoor Putting Green Installation for Basements & Garages

Rain, cold weather, and early sunsets do not have to stop your practice. A home putting green indoor turns a basement, garage, bonus room, or home gym into a year-round training space. Indoor greens need a different build than outdoor ones because they usually sit on concrete or wood floors. A foam pad or leveling layer helps create a smooth surface and a realistic feel underfoot.

Turf Restoration and Design is licensed, insured, and a member of the National Synthetic Turf Council, and we plan each indoor green around room size, lighting, and ceiling height. Businesses that want a green for offices or client spaces can explore our commercial turf installation service.

          Frequently Asked Questions

A well built synthetic green typically rolls between 9 and 11 on the Stimpmeter, which is the range a well maintained private club green sits in. For comparison, PGA Tour greens usually run around 12 and major championships push higher. We set the speed during installation through pile height, infill depth and how the surface is broomed, so tell us what your home course plays at and we will build to it.
Less than most people assume. A usable two-cup green with genuine break fits in a few hundred square feet, and a lot of our builds go into side yards and corners that were written off as dead space. What matters more than raw square footage is shape and access, because a long narrow strip can give you better lag putts than a wider square. We will mark out the realistic footprint during the site visit before you commit to anything.
It breaks if the installer builds it to. Contour comes from shaping the compacted base underneath, not from the turf, which is why cheaper greens play dead flat. We build tiers, falls and sidehill sections into the base by hand so you get uphill, downhill and breaking putts from different cup positions. That is the whole point of practising at home, since a flat green only teaches you one putt.
More than anywhere else on the property. We use a nylon putting surface because nylon holds its shape under repeated foot traffic and recovers quickly, which keeps the speed consistent across the whole green. Polyethylene, the material used in most landscape turf, is softer and matts down, so ball roll becomes unpredictable in the areas you walk on most. Some installers use landscape turf on greens because it costs less, and it is the first thing to check when comparing quotes.
Usually, yes. Greens slow down as infill is lost to rain, wind and foot traffic, and the fibers lie over where people stand most. We assess the surface, deep clean it, top up and redistribute the infill to the correct rate, then power broom the fibers back upright and re-cut any seams that have lifted. If the base underneath has settled or shifted we will tell you plainly, because surface work will not fix a base problem.

Where Would a Green Fit in Your Yard?

            Contact Us

Most people underestimate the space they have and overestimate the space a green needs. We will walk the property with you, mark out what is realistic, and tell you honestly whether the corner you had in mind will give you a green worth putting on.

            Area We Serve

Our putting green work stays inside a compact service area, which is deliberate. Shaping a base by hand and calibrating a surface takes time on site, and keeping our jobs close to the shop is what lets us run our own crews rather than hiring the work out. It also means we are close enough to come back and adjust something if you want the speed changed after you have played on it for a while.
