ADA Compliant Playground Turf Installation Built to the Fall Height

A play surface soft enough to take a fall and firm enough to take a wheelchair, which is a harder pairing than it sounds. We build to the fall height of your specific equipment, over a rated shock pad, and we hand you the numbers we built to.

Accessible Playground Surfacing with Synthetic Turf

Every child should be able to reach the swings, slides, and play structures, including kids who use wheelchairs, walkers, or other mobility aids. Loose materials like mulch and sand shift underfoot and make it hard for wheels to move. Accessible playground surfacing needs to be firm, stable, and smooth enough for everyone to get around safely. A synthetic turf playground meets that need with a surface that stays even and does not scatter. Accessibility still depends on the full system, the site, and how the play area is laid out. Turf Restoration and Design plans each playground turf installation with access routes in mind and explains the options honestly before work begins.

Turf Restoration and Design builds play areas as a specified system rather than a turf job with a pad thrown underneath. We measure the fall height of every piece of equipment before we quote, select the pad thickness to match rather than defaulting to one size, and we never use crumb rubber infill in a space where children sit, crawl and put their hands in it. At handover you get a written record of what went in, including the pad rating and the fall height the system was built for, so you are not taking anyone's word for it.

Our Services

Play area turf is one of five residential systems we build, and it is the only one with published safety standards attached to it. Each system is specified separately.

Synthetic Playground Turf with Shock Pads for Fall Zones

Falls are a normal part of play, so the surface under equipment matters a great deal. Synthetic playground turf is usually installed over a foam shock pad that helps absorb impact. The thickness of the pad should match the height of the equipment above it, since taller structures need more cushioning. Turf alone does not provide this protection, so the full layered system is what counts.

Turf Restoration and Design is licensed, insured, and a member of the National Synthetic Turf Council. We review your equipment heights and fall zones, then recommend a pad and turf combination that fits the playground layout.

Benefits of Our Service

The Fall Height Is a Number, Not a Feeling

You get the rating the system was built to in writing, so protection is something you can check rather than something you hope is there.

It Stays Where You Put It

Loose fill migrates out of exactly the spots that need it most, under swings and at the bottom of slides, while a bonded surface holds its depth permanently.

A Wheelchair Can Actually Cross It

Firmness and stability are tested properties here, which means a child or a visiting grandparent using a chair or a walker can reach the equipment rather than stopping at the edge.

Nothing Chemical Where Children Sit and Crawl

There is no fertilizer, herbicide or pesticide on the surface, and we keep crumb rubber out of residential play areas entirely.

Artificial Turf for Playground Upgrades from Mulch, Rubber & Pea Gravel

Many playgrounds still use wood mulch, rubber mulch, or pea gravel, and all three need constant attention. These materials get kicked out of place, pile up in some spots, and leave thin areas under swings and slides. They can also hide trash, sharp objects, and animal waste. Switching to artificial turf for playground areas removes the need for regular top-ups and raking. The surface stays neat, and it is easier to spot and clear debris. Turf Restoration and Design removes the old material, prepares a proper base with drainage, and installs the new turf using our own team and our own equipment.

Turf can also go underneath a raised trampoline, which removes the dark, damp space that usually collects debris and stops anyone having to crawl under there with a strimmer. For in-ground trampolines we handle the retaining and drainage around the pit as part of the same build.

Commercial Playground Artificial Turf Installation for Parks & Daycares

Public parks, daycares, apartment communities, and neighborhood associations all need play areas that handle daily use from many children. Commercial artificial turf installation gives these spaces a clean surface that dries quickly after rain and stays open more often. Bright colors and patterns can also mark play zones, pathways, and gathering spots.

Our owner spent more than twenty years working with turf before founding Turf Restoration and Design in 2020, and that experience helps us handle larger turf for playgrounds projects with care. We also offer school turf installation for recess areas and artificial turf for churches with children's ministry play spaces.

Our Work Process

01

We Measure Every Piece of Equipment

Fall height is measured from the highest designated play surface, not from the top of the frame, and it varies piece by piece. That measurement sets the pad specification for the whole use zone.

02

We Build the Base and Lay the Rated Pad

The base is excavated, graded and compacted to drain, then the shock pad is laid across the full use zone rather than only directly under the equipment, because children rarely land where you expect.

03

We Fit the Turf and Document What Went In

The turf is seamed and anchored flat with no lifted edges anywhere a child runs, then infilled and broomed. You receive a written record of the pad rating and the fall height the system was built for.

What People Are Saying About Us

Testimonials

    Karen M.

    Milton, GA

We had a strip of yard that never grew anything but weeds and mud. They regraded the whole thing before they laid anything down, which nobody else who quoted us even brought up. Two summers in and it still looks like the day they finished.

      Derrick H.

      Johns Creek, GA

Two labs and a yard that turned into a swamp every time it rained. They walked us through the drainage and the pet infill instead of just handing over a number, and there is no smell at all. The dogs took about ten seconds to decide they approved.

        Tom B.

        Roswell, GA

I asked for a putting green and they came back with a layout that used a slope I thought was a problem. Three real breaks on it now and it rolls true. They were on site every day and cleaned up behind themselves every evening.

          Angela R.

          Peachtree Corners, GA

Our courtyard was costing us a fortune in irrigation and yearly sod repair. They phased the work so tenants were never fully blocked off, and they hit the dates they gave us. That maintenance line has basically disappeared from the budget.

Artificial Turf Rolls for Playground Backyard Projects

Many parents look at artificial turf rolls for playground backyard projects and consider installing them on their own. Rolls alone rarely give good results without proper grading, base preparation, drainage, and padding under the play set. Without that groundwork, the turf can ripple, hold water, or offer too little cushioning in fall areas. A professionally installed artificial turf playground stays flat, drains well, and looks neat for years.

Turf Restoration and Design is a family owned company, and our turf is made locally and is 100 percent recyclable. Every backyard play area includes a 15 year material warranty and a 5 year labor warranty, and our residential turf installation service can finish the rest of your yard.

          Frequently Asked Questions

Legally, no. The ADA governs public accommodations and government facilities, so a private family backyard is not covered by it. Building to the standard at home is a choice rather than an obligation. It becomes worth making when a child or a regular visitor uses a wheelchair or a walker, when the area sits in an HOA common space, or when you run a licensed daycare from the property. Plenty of families also simply want the accessible option because it costs little extra to specify at the build stage and cannot be added later.
Ask for it in writing, from any installer. The rating belongs to the installed system, meaning the base, pad, turf and infill together, so a turf product with a certificate attached to it tells you nothing on its own. What you want to see is the fall height the system was specified for and the pad rating used to reach it. We measure your equipment, build to that number and hand the specification over at completion. Third-party verification such as IPEMA on the components is a reasonable extra thing to ask about.
Engineered wood fiber can perform well on impact when it is fresh and at full depth, so the honest comparison is not about day one. It is about month eighteen. Loose fill scatters, compacts and thins out precisely under the swings and slides where it is needed, and unless someone rakes and tops it up on a schedule the rating quietly disappears. It also struggles on accessibility. A bonded system holds its depth permanently, which is why the performance you buy is the performance you still have in three years.
No, and this surprises people. A properly specified pad is firm underfoot because it is engineered to absorb a high-energy impact rather than a footstep, which is the same principle as a running track. If a surface feels soft and bouncy when you walk on it, that usually points to an over-thick pad or a poorly compacted base rather than good protection. It should feel solid to walk across and only do its job in a fall.
It should, and the standard exists precisely because materials change behaviour with temperature. ASTM F1292 requires testing at 25 degrees, at ambient temperature and at elevated temperature, so a compliant system has to perform across that range rather than only on a mild day. Some rubber products stiffen in the cold and soften in high heat, which is one of the reasons we specify the pad rather than using whatever comes bundled with a turf order.

Is Your Play Area Actually Rated for the Equipment On It?

            Contact Us

Most home play areas have never been measured, which means nobody knows what the surface would do in a fall. We will measure the fall height of what you already own and tell you plainly what your current surface is and is not doing.

            Area We Serve

Play areas are the jobs we are most careful about scheduling, because the work has to be sequenced around the equipment and the family using it. Keeping our radius tight means our own crew handles every one of them and we can be back on site quickly if a piece of equipment changes and the use zone needs extending.
